What is Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DfMA)?

DfMA is a design approach that focuses on the efficient optimisation of manufacturing and assembly of building envelope systems, minimising time, reducing on-site errors and driving down costs.

Predominately DfMA has been used in the automotive industry however more and more construction companies and specialist contractors around the world are starting to utilise this approach for off-site prefabricated solutions.

As one of South Africa’s Leading Complete Building Envelope Specialist Contractors, MRC Group has been at the forefront of this cutting-edge design approach bringing together the two methodologies (Design for Manufacturing & Design for Assembly) and applying them both to all the various external and internal building envelope solutions that we DESIGN, SUPPLY, INSTALL & MAINTAIN.

DfMA & Building Envelope Solutions.

The DfMA design approach ensures that we simplify the design of any building envelope solution such as metal roofs, facades, rainscreens, living roofs & walls, waterproofing, architectural louvre systems, passive fire protection or internal partition systems to achieve higher quality installations, increase speed on-site and reduce costs.

The Two Methodologies Combination:

Design for Manufacture.

This aspect of DfMA focuses the designer on selecting the most effective materials, products, systems and solutions and breaking it down into its various component parts. Simplifying the production of and minimising the complexity of the system reduces costs and improves manufacturing time.

Design for Assembly.

This aspect of DFMA focuses the designer on simplification of assembly on-site, minimising the number of components and therefore reducing installation costs and on-site errors.

Summary: Both the Manufacturing and the Assembly aspects of this design approach reduces material, labour, plant and overhead costs, whilst ensuring a safer, sustainable, durable and higher quality building envelope.

DfMA & Sustainable Design Solutions.

MRC Group in South Africa, right from our inception, has focused and promoted the use of sustainable building envelope systems. DfMA has been at the heart of our Designs, Safe Installation Methodologies and Long-Term Maintenance services.

Any building envelope solution, whether it is external or internal, has a key part to play in any new build or refurbishment building project. When considering sustainability, depending on the operation within the building, the building envelope has the largest impact on the overall building’s total energy consumption and therefore the major cost of the total value of the building.

Early stage design involvement of key DfMA contractors will have a positive impact on the overall design of the building, minimising the environmental impact, improving efficiency and driving down costs.

MRC Group utilises our own technical Specifications, CAD systems drawings and construction details in combination with BIM modelling to dovetail together all the interests associated with the structure and the building envelope.

One of the key aspects of simplification of the building envelope is associated with the important interaction between the structure and the building envelope, and who is responsible for what element.

Negative & Positive Mass

We identify the outside face of the structure as ‘Negative Mass’ and the outside face of the building envelope as ‘Positive Mass,’ which clearly identifies who is responsible for each element of the building.

As identified on the system drawings. (Red - Negative Mass & Green - Positive Mass)

The zone between the negative and positive mass is built up on the basis of the projects performance brief and regulations associated with aesthetics, structural, thermal, fire and acoustic deliverables.

The Main Deliverables of DfMA.

· Ensure safer working practices and methodologies.

· Increasing manufacturing and assembly efficiencies by minimising the number of components that make up the building envelope.

· Reducing manufacturing and assembly construction time and costs.

· Clear identification of design and construction tolerances.

· Clear identification of Negative and Positive masses and the associated responsibilities.

· Higher quality installations with dramatic reductions in risk.

· Ensure the most achievable sustainable building envelope solution for the long-term operation of the building.

MRC Group, South Africa is here to assist you in delivering high quality building envelope solutions.
